Natural materials for life's most profound transitions

We created a home-like environment for this hospice renovation and extensive addition, winner of the Community Institutional category at the 2023 Fraser Valley Commercial Building Awards. The project includes 15 care suites and family living spaces featuring a kitchen, dining areas, laundry, and a library that support both patients and their loved ones during end-of-life care. Each care suite opens onto a private patio connecting to a shared courtyard, providing direct access to outdoor space and a peaceful garden setting for quiet reflection.

The interior is infused with natural features, including stone elements and beautiful wooden slat details along hallways and nurse stations, creating an atmosphere that connects patients and caregivers to the beauty of the outdoors. A serene colour palette fosters the calm and tranquillity essential to the hospice environment, while neutral, earthy materials echo the organic roofline concept developed by our architecture team. Carefully selected skylights soften the space and bring in natural light year-round, while a mural painted by a local artist adds warmth and pays tribute to the strength and beauty within the community. Through thoughtful material selection and spatial design, this project creates an environment that honours dignity and supports families during one of life’s most profound transitions.
