George Schmidt Centre is a supportive housing facility that provides compassionate, dignified care for adult men on their wellness and recovery journey. Located on the Kinghaven Treatment Centre campus and funded by BC Housing, the facility comprises 30 fully furnished, self-contained bachelor suites alongside essential support amenities including a client lounge, gym, laundry room, medical and psychiatry services, a pharmacy, and OATS therapy spaces.
The architecture responds to the sensitive nature of the building’s purpose by creating an environment that feels residential rather than clinical. The exterior features a bold yet calming colour palette with siding in a variety of tones and textures, complemented by brick accents at the base that provide grounded permanence. Large windows throughout the façade bring abundant natural light into interior spaces, supporting the healing process and creating visual connections to the surrounding landscape. The building form is broken into varied volumes with rooflines that reduce its apparent scale and reinforce a neighbourhood-appropriate residential character. This LEED Gold Certified project, winner of the Merit Award in the Institutional category at the 2013 Fraser Valley Commercial Building Awards, demonstrates how thoughtful, sustainable, value-driven design can create environments that foster hope and healing for vulnerable populations.
