Revitalizing aging rentals in Edmonton

An extensive renovation and addition to three 4-storey apartment buildings originally constructed in the 1970s in Edmonton. The multifaceted scope required an aesthetically appealing and economical solution for joining two buildings, adding an integrated entrance addition, and providing new shared amenity spaces and elevators throughout the complex. The architectural challenge centred on modernizing aging structures while respecting budget constraints and maintaining operational continuity for existing tenants.

The design solution features a refined, contemporary aesthetic with corrugated metal cladding, curtain wall glazing, and red accent elements that modernize the entire development while blending with the original exterior. A bright 4-storey skywalk system now connects the buildings and provides year-round access to renovated amenities, including a gym, lounge, and updated lobbies, without exposure to Edmonton’s harsh winter climate. This enclosed circulation strategy transforms what were once separate buildings into a unified residential community with improved functionality and enhanced quality of life for tenants. The project demonstrates how strategic additions and considered material updates can revitalize aging apartment buildings, extending their lifespan while improving the resident experience.
