A home, not a clinical facility

Holmberg House was Abbotsford’s first adult hospice residence, providing compassionate end-of-life care in a setting that prioritizes dignity, comfort, and connection. Located on the Campus of Care complex shared with Canuck Place and Matthews House, this facility includes 10 care suites and two visitor suites, along with dedicated spaces for grief support, volunteer training, educational seminars, and one-on-one services. Funded through provincial capital investment and generous donors, the hospice is operated by Fraser Health Authority.

The architecture embraces a craftsman design vocabulary to ensure the building feels like a home rather than a clinical facility. The exterior features warm stone veneer and cedar shingle siding that convey timeless residential character and integrate sensitively into the community context. Inside, high-end finishes including slate tile flooring, built-in cabinetry, and a two-way fireplace create a calm ambiance that supports families during one of life’s most profound transitions. Wood-frame construction allowed for efficient delivery while maintaining the refined aesthetic and intimate scale essential to the building’s purpose, demonstrating how thoughtful, value-driven design can honour the profound nature of end-of-life care.
